چکیده

2 In this work, we characterized the metagenome of a Malaysian mangrove soil sample via next 3 generation sequencing (NGS). Shotgun NGS data analysis revealed high diversity of microbes 4 from Bacteria and Archaea domains. The metabolic potential of the metagenome was 5 reconstructed using the NGS data and the SEED classification in MEGAN shows abundance of 6 virulence factor genes, implying that mangrove soil is potential reservoirs of pathogens.

Bioprospecting Potential of the Soil Metagenome: Novel Enzymes and Bioactivities

The microbial diversity in soil ecosystems is higher than in any other microbial ecosystem. The majority of soil microorganisms has not been characterized, because the dominant members have not been readily culturable on standard cultivation media; therefore, the soil ecosystem is a great reservoir for the discovery of novel microbial enzymes and bioactivities. The soil metagenome, the collecti...

Census of the viral metagenome within an activated sludge microbial assemblage.

The viral metagenome within an activated sludge microbial assemblage was sampled using culture-dependent and culture-independent methods and compared to the diversity of activated sludge bacterial taxa. A total of 70 unique cultured bacterial isolates, 24 cultured bacteriophages, 829 bacterial metagenomic clones of 16S rRNA genes, and 1,161 viral metagenomic clones were subjected to a phylogene...

BAC bacterial artificial chromosome BrdU 5-bromo-2′-deoxyuridine DGGE denaturant gradient gel electrophoresis FISH fluorescent in situ hybridization GC guanine + cytosine PCR polymerase chain reaction PLFA phospholipid fatty acid

Soils sustain an immense diversity of microbes, which, to a large extent, remains unexplored. A range of novel methods, most of which are based on rRNA and rDNA analyses, have uncovered part of the soil microbial diversity. The next step in the era of microbial ecology is to extract genomic, evolutionary and functional information from bacterial artificial chromosome libraries of the soil commu...

Comparative Metagenomic Analysis Reveals Mechanisms for Stress Response in Hypoliths from Extreme Hyperarid Deserts

Understanding microbial adaptation to environmental stressors is crucial for interpreting broader ecological patterns. In the most extreme hot and cold deserts, cryptic niche communities are thought to play key roles in ecosystem processes and represent excellent model systems for investigating microbial responses to environmental stressors. However, relatively little is known about the genetic...

Metagenomic Profiling of a Microbial Assemblage Associated with the California Mussel: A Node in Networks of Carbon and Nitrogen Cycling

Mussels are conspicuous and often abundant members of rocky shores and may constitute an important site for the nitrogen cycle due to their feeding and excretion activities. We used shotgun metagenomics of the microbial community associated with the surface of mussels (Mytilus californianus) on Tatoosh Island in Washington state to test whether there is a nitrogen-based microbial assemblage ass...
